The Centre was created with the vision of promoting critical understanding and scholarly engagement with issues of social exclusion, marginalization, discrimination, inequality, and inclusive development affecting disadvantaged and vulnerable sections of society.
In 2014, the Centre was renamed in honour of Al-Beruni, the eminent medieval scholar, historian, philosopher, and polymath whose pioneering studies of Indian society, culture, and civilization continue to inspire interdisciplinary approaches to understanding diversity, pluralism, and social systems.
Today, ABCSSI serves as a premier academic and research centre dedicated to advancing knowledge on social inclusion through interdisciplinary teaching, research, documentation, policy engagement, and community outreach. The Centre focuses on the lived experiences and developmental challenges of Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs), as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with particular emphasis on religious minorities, Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), women, persons with disabilities, transgender persons, and other marginalized communities.
The Centre undertakes both qualitative and quantitative research to examine issues of exclusion, identity, poverty, inequality, social justice, and inclusive growth. Its evidence-based research contributes to informed policymaking, academic discourse, and the formulation of strategies aimed at fostering equitable and sustainable development.
Over the years, ABCSSI has developed a valuable repository of research studies, policy papers, databases, reports, dissertations, publications, and academic resources relating to marginalized communities. These resources serve scholars, students, researchers, policymakers, government agencies, civil society organizations, and development practitioners across the country.
Recognizing the rapidly changing social and economic landscape, the Centre continuously expands and reorients its research agenda to address emerging challenges arising from globalization, technological transformation, changing livelihood patterns, and evolving development paradigms. Through its academic and outreach initiatives, the Centre actively contributes to the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, promoting equity, equality, dignity, empowerment, social justice, and participatory development.
