Translation is the mean for the development of human Civilization and Culture - Prof. Arjmand Ara National Seminar "Translation and Transformation" held at MANUU

The process of translation has remained the most important means for the continuity and development of human civilization and culture. The art of translation has played an extraordinary role since ancient times. Prof. Arjmand Ara expressed these views yesterday at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) while delivering a keynote address in the inaugural of two-day national seminar. Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor of the university, presided over the inaugural session.
The Department of Translation, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) organized the seminar “Translation and Transformation: Exploring the intersections of Language, Culture, and Society”.
Continuing her address, Prof. Arjmand Ara said the intellectual and cultural heritage of the oldest civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome would have remained inaccessible to the world had it not been transmitted to later generations through translation. In the medieval period, if the Arabs had not translated Greek philosophy and sciences into Arabic, the world today might not even have been familiar with the names of Aristotle and Plato, She added.
In his presidential address, Prof. Ainul Hasan said that the world of knowledge can never dispense with translation, and that every major writer in the world has engaged in translation at some stage of life. The Vice-Chancellor presented highly insightful observations on the importance of translation, the interrelationship between translation and culture, and the dynamics of translation. He also inaugurated a poster presentation featuring the research work of the Department’s scholars.
Speaking as the chief guest, Prof. Ali Rifaad Fatihi said that translation is not merely a linguistic activity but a complete cultural process in which the culture of one language is molded into the culture of another language. The Guest of honour Prof. Baran Farooqi said in her address that words in different cultures appear with their own specific meanings, and when they are transferred into another language, those meanings often cannot be fully retained; therefore, the target language has to coin new words within its own semantic context.
The honorary guest Dr. Suhail Ahmad Farooqi referred to the richness of vocabulary in the Urdu language.
Earlier, Prof. Khalid Mubashshir al-Zafar, Head, Department of Translation, delivered the welcome address. The seminar coordinator, Prof. Syed Mahmood Kazmi, introduced the seminar, while the Dean of the School of Languages, Linguistics and Indology, Prof. Gulfishan Habib, introduced the School. Prof. Faheemuddin Ahmed conducted the proceedings of the inaugural session, and Dr. Kahkashan Latif presented the vote of thanks.
A large number of expert teachers, researchers, and scholars from different parts of the country and from diverse disciplines presented their research papers and had discussions in the seminar.
