7.1 Institutional Values and Social Responsibilities 7.1.1 Measures initiated by the Institution for the promotion of gender equity during the last five years

Gender equity and sensitization

MANUU possesses a privileged right to promote higher education through Urdu medium, and to ensure women empowerment through gender equity in education. To promote women education, the university is doing consistent efforts.

The Department of Women Education was established in 2004 with objective to sensitize & equip students with issues related to gender sensitization, women empowerment etc. The Centre for Women’s Studies, established in 2005, also engaged in training, research, extension & advocacy activities.

Established an exclusive college for Women (College of Arts and Science for Women, Budgam, J & K) offering higher education.

MANUU step towards waiver of tuition fee for girl students at the time of admission (first semester only) to any of the academic programmes offered except Ph.D. to enhance the gross enrolment ratio of women to meet its mandate. They have to pay only Rs. 300 & 200/- towards application cum registration fee for entrance & merit based admissions respectively. Also relaxation of 5% is provided to them in both the merit & entrance qualifying examination/marks. 

Women candidates are also exempted from the payment of registration fee and also have age relaxation for employment. Female employees also get maternity leave, child care leave and are also entitled to avail leave on adoption of child.

Students apprised of the gender issues during the Orientation/Self Induction Program held for newly admitted students each year.

Central physical work out facility provided for students in girls & boys hostel. There are significant number of women cadets in MANUU NCC unit. Indoor & outdoor games for Men & Women students and staff were held on various occasions.

University has taken several measures to enhance safety & security on campuses by constituting Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), installing CCTV cameras & by providing round the clock security. The women security guards are also available at Girls hostels. Glass pane at eye level has been installed on the doors of faculty rooms & offices. Faculty has been directed to keep the door of the lecture hall open during classes.

The ICC ensures that posters promoting gender equity & sensitization are placed on the Notice Boards. A Complaint Box is placed outside the ICC office. Telephone / Mobile numbers of the ICC Chairperson and members are made available on the Notice Board of the ICC office, University Directory & Website. Strict confidentiality is maintained by the ICC to encourage the complainant to lodge complaint without fear.

Counselling is provided to the complainants and the respondents independently by the ICC. The Counsellor of the University provides counselling to students of all departments. Training & Placement cell also conducted special lectures, mock interviews etc. for career counselling of students.

 

The Day Care Centre was established in March 2009. It was an initiative towards promoting social empowerment of Women Employees. Focusing on a major concern of the employees, to leave behind their children at home, day care centre was started.

University also ogranised training programmes, seminars, workshops etc. on gender equity and sensitization. The audio-visual of these programmes are uploaded at IMCMANUU YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/imcmanuu) so as to reach a large and diversified audience.
