I. Brief Description about the Lab/Resource Centre Introduction:
Mathematics lab has always occupied an important place in the curriculum. It helps in training and disciplining the mind and also developing the power of thinking and reasoning. It has been rightly said that higher the achievement in the field of mathematics, so is the nations development. Today in the fast technologically oriented society, it has found a greater role to play, and in our department students prepared Teaching Learning Material under the guidance of teacher educators in Mathematics and established Mathematics Laboratory during the year 2014.
Need for a Mathematics Laboratory:
- Mathematics laboratory is activity cantered and a child is placed in problem solving situation through self exploration and discovery. He/She provides a solution based on his experience, needs and interest. Some of the ways in which a mathematics laboratory can contribute to the learning of the subject are.
- It provides an opportunity to understand and internalize the basic mathematical concepts through concrete objects and situations.
- It enables the students to verify or discover several geometrical properties and facts using models or by paper cutting and folding technique.
- It helps the students to build interest and confidence in learning the subject.
- The laboratory provides opportunity to exhibit the relatedness of mathematical concepts with everyday life.
- It provides greater scope for individual participation in the process of learning and becoming autonomous learners.
- It provides scope for greater involvement of both the mind and the hand which facilitate cognition.
- The laboratory allows and encourages students to think, discuss with each other and the teacher and assimilates the concepts in a more effective manner.
- It enables the teacher to demonstrate, explain and reinforce abstract mathematical ideas by using concrete objects, models, charts, graphs, pictures, posters etc.
Objectives of Mathematics Laboratory
To provide readily accessible rich manipulative materials to emphasis on “learning by doing”
- To develop an attitude of enquiry.
- Remove the weakness of present day mathematics education.
- To develop much needed confidence in students.
- To generate interest in the subject.
- To make the students divergent thinkers.
- To make the children to look for pattern and ask questions.
Utility of Mathematics Lab for Students
- Children experience the joy of discovering Math concepts through exploration
- Learning with understanding helps them enjoy Math and brings them closer to Math
- Technology enables visualization of difficult and abstract Math concepts, and this has a lasting impact in their learning
- Each and every child learns Math in the way best suited for him/her – Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic or a combination of these
- Virtual activities designed more like games to excite children and get them to practice Math while enjoying themselves
Utility of Mathematics Lab for Teachers
- It helps the teachers for experiments aligned to curriculum with detailed step by step instruction
- Helps to keep the attention span of the students focused on the material being taught
- Readymade activities and assessments to reduce burden on teachers
- Comprehensive teacher training workshops to introduce them to newer ways of teaching
