Department of Urdu
The Department of Urdu at Maulana Azad National Urdu University was established in 2004 and it is one of the pioneers in imparting Urdu Language and Literature in the modern era. The main task of this department is to develop a keen interest among the students to get acquainted with the mesmerizing world of Urdu Literature. The Department’s main objective is to spread awareness about literary and cultural importance and relevance of the Urdu culture, language and literature in India and around the world. It aims to promote the Urdu language as the language of knowledge, and Urdu literature as the literature of human values. Here, at MANUU Lucknow Campus, the Department of Urdu started in 2009 and since then it is focusing upon teaching as well as research activities.
The Urdu Department at Lucknow Campus offers Bachelors and Masters Program in addition to the PhD program. Along with the regular studies, the department provides various opportunities to interact with the renowned scholars. Such interactions undoubtedly enhance the abilities of students and open new vistas of learning for them.
Extension lectures and literary events and discussions are a regular part of the activities of the Department. Extension lectures on various literary, cultural and linguistic topics have been organized by the Department. Professor Nasir Ahmad Khan, Janab Abid Sohail, Professor Mirza Khalil Ahmad Baig, Allama Aijaz Farrukh, Professor Khalid Mehmood, Professor Sagheer Ifrahim, Pofessor Anees Ashfaque, Dr. Sabiha Anwar, Professor Abdul Rasheed, Professor Shahpar Rasool, Professor Naseem Uddin Farees, Professor Ahmad Mahfooz, Professor Abbas Raza Nayyar, Professor Aslam Jamshedpuri, are the eminent personalities who have delivered extension lectures in the Lucknow Campus on various occasions.
The faculty members of the department Dr. Mujahid Ul Islam, Dr. Ishrat Naheed, Dr. Omair Manzar and Dr. Noor Fatima are actively engaged with the work of research and criticism and have published several books and have also been conferred awards for their works. Some of the faculty members also got the opportunity to write Urdu books related to the syllabus of some reputed Indian Universities. The faculty members are also regularly invited for giving talks in Seminars, Conferences etc. and for other academic activities.
