Profile of Afroz Alam

Dr. Afroz Alam is presently serving as Professor and Head, Department of Political Science, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (a Central University established by an Act of Parliament in 1998) at Hyderabad, Telangana (India). He has also served as the Director of Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (A Research Centre established by the Government of India under X Plan, 2007 at MANUU) from 2017 to 2021. He did his Ph.D. on “Caste and Community in UP: A Study of Electoral Politics since 1990” from Aligarh Muslim University.

He regularly writes research articles, concept and policy papers on contemporary political and governance issues, electoral politics, and minority rights in journals of repute. His opinion articles are regularly been published in many newspapers, magazines and online portals including The Tribune, Deccan Chronicle, Asian Age, The Statesman, The Times of India, Deccan Herald, New Indian Express, Tehelka, Firstpost, The Wire, The Conversation, The Citizen and Economic and Political Weekly. ‘As a keen researcher, Dr. Alam has contributed more than 40 research articles, essays and book reviews in peer reviewed journals and edited books, and authored a book titled, Electoral Dynamics of Caste and Community in India. “In the Name of Muslims” (Single Author Book to be published by Routledge), “Electoral Politics in India” (Jointly Edited book to be published by Orient BlackSwan) and “Institutional Decline in the New-Liberal Regime (Jointly Edited book to be published by Thomson Reuters) are his forthcoming books.

Previously, he was also associated with Lokniti Programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) initially as field investigator and later as co-supervisor to conduct field surveys in Uttar Pradesh during 1999-2007 to understand the state of the nation and political behaviour of the people. In 2018, he was awarded 'Excellence in Education Award' by the AMP, Mumbai in recognition of his services in the field of education. He was also awarded with 'Shah Waliullah Award-2005' jointly with Prof. Faizan Mustafa for the Best Essay of the Year by the Institute of Objective Studies, New Delhi.

He has also been associated with the foundation of 3 Law Schools in India namely, KIIT Law School; National Law University Odisha; and Glocal Law School. He was credited with many initiatives in these institutions including innovative teaching, administration, curriculum design, talk series, research activities through specialised centres, policy formulation, outreach programmes etc. He has been instrumental in instituting 3 dialogue series such as 'Hyderabad Dialogue', 'Meet with the Author', ‘Conversation with Achievers’ as well as ‘Inclusion Advocacy Programme’ at MANUU.

Dr. Afroz has also served as the Head of the Department of School of Liberal Arts (NLUO), Director of Centre for Public Policy and Governance (NLUO) and Registrar of National Law University Odisha.

His area of research includes Contemporary & Comparative Politics, Election Studies, Multiculturalism & Minority Rights.
