Dr. Ziyauddin, Head of the Department of Sociology, School of Arts & Social Sciences at Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, brings a wealth of experience and education to his role. For over two decades, his academic journey has included teaching at prestigious universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia, Hamdard University and the National Institute of Social Defence, GoI, Delhi, before joining MANUU in 2007.

He completed schooling in Patna before earning degrees in Sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia, an MPhil from JNU, and a PhD in Sociology from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, Delhi. His research has focused on health experiences, sanitation, occupations, citizenship, gender politics, the sociology of minorities and Dalits, urban segregation, the exclusion and inclusion of marginalised communities, etc. 

A few of his books are Dimensions of Social Exclusion: An Ethnographic Exploration, CSP, UK (2009); Muslim Scavengers in India (Germany-2012); Muslims of India: Exclusionary Process and Inclusionary Measures (editors) by Manak Publication (2012); Reading Minorities in India: Forms and Perspectives (2022) by Rawat Publications; Sociology of Health in a Dalit Community: Axes of Exclusion by Cambridge Scholars Publishing-UK (2024); and Occupational Caste Groups' Illness and Health in India: Lessons from the Lives of Conservancy Workers, Singapore: Springer Nature (2025). 

Currently, three upcoming book projects are: Sociology of Subaltern Communities: Revisiting Minorities, Dalits, and Tribal Studies in South India by Rawat Publications (2026) & Politics of Gender, Health and Digital Initiatives in India (2026-Springer) & Muslim Lives Matter: Health Inequality and Social Exclusion in South India (Routledge).

With several research projects funded by the ICSSR, the UGC & international bodies, he served as the first regular Convener of RC-26 on Minority Studies, Indian Sociological Society (ISS 2018-2021); an editorial committee member for the ‘Journal of Exclusion Studies’, Indonesian Journal of Islamisation Studies (INJAS), Indonesia & Bhartiya Samajshastra Sameeksha by ISS; and Member in Editorial Committee Advisory Committee of the Journal “Explorations—E-journal of the Indian Sociological Society”. 

Ziyauddin is a profound speaker who has delivered over a hundred invited lectures in various national and international forums. He also contributes by writing opinion pieces on different web portals and pages & an alumnus of the International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP-2019) of the Department of State, United States of America.
