Lecture on Gandhian Journalism held at MANUU

Hyderabad:

The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) organized a lecture “Journalism of Mahatma Gandhi” by Prof. Shatish Kumar Rai, President of the Indian Society of Gandhian Studies. The talk illuminated the life and journalistic contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, underscoring how his commitment to truth and justice shaped his unique approach to journalism.

Highlighting Gandhi’s early experiences with racial discrimination in South Africa, Prof. Rai explained how these pivotal moments influenced Gandhi’s transition from a young lawyer to an activist leader, ultimately defining his life’s purpose and his journalistic vision.

Speaking as the keynote speaker, he recounted Gandhi’s belief in journalism as a tool for social reform, with newspapers like Young India, Harijan, and Indian Opinion serving as his platforms to advocate for justice and equality. Gandhi saw journalism as a sacred duty, Prof. Rai noted, and urged fellow journalists to commit to accuracy and integrity. His principle of Satyagraha (truth-force) shaped his journalism, making him a champion of ethical reporting that was firmly rooted in honesty and inclusivity.

In closing, Prof. Rai underscored the relevance of Gandhian journalism in today’s fast-paced, digital age. At a time when sensationalism often drives the news cycle, Gandhi’s principles of truth, non-violence, and social welfare remain a guiding force for journalists to prioritize integrity over sensationalism.

The lecture encouraged the students to consider how Gandhi’s ideals can be applied to current media challenges, particularly on digital platforms.

Prof.  Mohammad Fariyad welcomed the guest. Students, faculty members and scholars attended the lecture.
