MANUU hosts National Conference on Reframing Subaltern Narratives

 Hyderabad:

Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) underscored the necessity of remembering ordinary women whose contributions have often been erased from mainstream historiography today while presiding over the inaugural session of two-day National Conference “Reframing the Subaltern Narratives: Comparative and Interdisciplinary Insights”. He stressed the importance of folklore studies in recovering marginalized voices and cultural memories.

The Chief Guest, Prof. N. Nagaraju, Vice-Chancellor, EFLU, Hyderabad, spoke on the continuing relevance of revisiting and reinterpreting marginalized voices in contemporary academia.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Rajendra Chenni, Director, Manasa Centre for Cultural Studies, Shivamogga, offered a compelling reflection on Allama Iqbal’s poetry, interpreting it through the lens of subalternity and cultural resistance, thereby opening new avenues for critical engagement.

The Guest of Honour, Prof. Vibha Sharma from Aligarh Muslim University, engaged the audience through Socratic questioning. Invoking Kabir Das, she remarked that “unlearning should be the initiation” of any meaningful critical inquiry, encouraging scholars to rethink established frameworks.

Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Registrar, MANUU, addressed the gathering, highlighting the university’s commitment to fostering critical academic dialogue.

Prof. Gulfishaan Habeeb, Dean, School of Languages, Linguistics and Indology (SLL&I), and Prof. Razaullah Khan, Director, CDOE, also shared their remarks. Prof. Nagendra Kottacheruvu, Head, Department of English and Conference Director delivered a welcome address and proposed vote of thanks. Dr. Geeta, Associate Professor and Conference Convener, outlined the objectives of the conference.

Three publications: the Book of Abstracts of the conference, a poetry collection titled A Song of Herself by Deeksha Alur, and Beyond Boundaries: Voices of Shores by Dr. Geeta were also released on the occasion. Rahat Firoz, Research Scholar compered the inaugural session.

The conference is jointly organised by the Department of English and the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), MANUU, bringing together scholars from diverse academic backgrounds to deliberate on marginalized voices in literature and culture.
