Urdu is an Indian language: Dr Peggy Mohan

Hyderabad:

Urdu is historically an Indian language. It also has some sounds and 'substratum' features that exist in the Dravidian family of languages. These viewed were exrpressed by Dr. Peggy Mohan during her lectures on Urdu and Dakhni organised by Maulana Azad Chair at Maulana Azad National Urdu University on Thursday in Central Library Auditorium. Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor presided over the lectures.

Speaking on ‘The Story and Prehistory of Urdu', she explained how Urdu evolved in the periods when it was called with various names. She argued that Urdu also has influence of Uzbek language. She used Dakhni as a case to disprove a model of language evolution which holds that language starts from situations of chaos, then it becomes pidgin and when children speak pidgin, they make it creole. In her second lecture on 'Dakhni: A Hybrid Language of the Borderlands', she spoke of two types of Dakhni: prakrit dakhni and local dakhni. She identified many features of Telugu, Marathi and other languages in Dakhni.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, a Persian scholar and poet, said that local culture remains very strong in any language. Urdu carries local culture and it is a language of beauty and subtleties.

Mr. Sajjad Shahid, an expert on Deccan culture and heritage, chaired the first lecture. The second lecture was chaired by Prof. Naseemuddin Farees, an expert on Deccan Studies and Urdu. Prof. Syed Imtiaz Hasnain, Professor, Maulana Azad Chair, introduced the guest and thanked V.C. Syed Ainul Hasan, OSD-I Prof. Shugufta Shaheen, Dean Prof Aziz Bano and others for their support.

Further, an interactive session of Dr Peggy Mohan and Prof. S. Imtiaz Hasnain with faculty members, research scholars and students of School of Languages, Linguistics and Indology was also organized in conference hall on Friday.
