Introduction Dr. Md. Ehtesham Akhtar is a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad, with nearly 19 years of teaching and research experience at both national and international levels.
Teaching Experience Before joining MANUU, Dr. Akhtar taught at several reputed institutions including the Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics and the Department of Sociology at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Apostle Institute of Technology, Greater Noida, and the Arjun Singh Centre for Distance and Open Learning at Jamia Millia Islamia. He has also served as Guest Faculty, Visiting Faculty, and Academic Counsellor at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
Research Projects Dr. Akhtar has been associated with several research and development projects. He worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) under the National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP). He also contributed to a project under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India titled “A Study on Institutionalized Elderly Women in Delhi.” He also worked with INCLEN Trust International on the project “Foundational Work for Brain-to-Society Diagnostics for Prevention of Childhood Obesity and Its Chronic Disease Consequences.” He also served as an Associate Consultant with Strategic Alliance Management Services Pvt. Ltd.
WHO – NPSP Work While working with WHO, he monitored eight Assembly constituencies covering villages, urban areas and slum settlements. His responsibilities included micro-planning, mapping, and interviews with parents and field workers involved in the immunization programme. He trained approximately 1,300 booth workers and Anganwadi workers and around 200 supervisors. He also conducted house-to-house visits to check for unimmunized children and carried out street surveys at public locations such as bus stands and railway stations.
Field Monitoring Activities He regularly met teams and supervisors to assess team workload, training needs, supervision quality and vaccine availability. He identified missed areas, provided field feedback and on-the-spot training. He also reported cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis to the Surveillance Medical Officer in Delhi and organized workshops and community meetings for monitoring and evaluation.
Childhood Obesity Project While working with INCLEN Trust International, he conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with teachers, Anganwadi workers, food supply officers, doctors and village Sarpanches. He also conducted in-depth interviews with heads of households and performed transcription, translation, coding and qualitative data analysis.
Elderly Women Study In the project “Problems Faced by Elderly Women Living in Old Age Homes in Delhi” under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, he helped develop research tools and supervised research investigators. He conducted interviews in old age homes and analyzed data using SPSS and contributed to report writing.

Academic Contributions Dr. Akhtar has published 7 international research papers with ISSN numbers, 12 chapters in edited books with ISBN numbers, and one research paper without ISBN. Under his supervision, 11 Master's dissertations in Sociology have been completed. He also serves as reviewer for journals such as the Asian Research Journal of Arts & Social Sciences, Women's Link Journal, and publications of Kamla-Raj Enterprises (KRE). He has presented 12 research papers at national and international conferences and 5 papers are currently under publication.
