Department of Arabic
Arabic is considered one of the most widely spoken languages of the world. In view of its religious importance, its linguistic richness, its prolific literature, its profound history, its universal popularity and its ever increasing demand in today’s globalized and commercialized world, it has drawn remarkable attention from the academic circles and educational institutions all over the world. Arabic departments were established in almost all the prominent Indian universities as well as in a large number of colleges over the past century.
Department of Arabic at Maulana Azad National Urdu University was established in 2006 in its main campus located in Hyderabad. Later on, when the Lucknow Campus of the university was established in 2009, Department of Arabic was one of the four language departments established here at that time. MA Arabic with regular mode was introduced in Lucknow Campus in 2009, and several batches successfully completed their course during the past few years. MA program consists of 4 semesters.
BA program was launched in MANUU Lucknow Campus in 2018-19 academic session. It consists of 6 semesters with Arabic being a core paper in all these semesters. Presently number of students in the Department has reached around 60. There are 12 research scholars in PhD program who are doing research on different topics of Arabic language and literature.
A comprehensive and well-designed syllabus of the Department covers almost all the needful aspects of Arabic language and literature. Beside literature, subjects like translation, linguistics and communication skills are given due importance in the syllabus in order to equip students with adequate professional knowledge and sound skills in their field.
In order to infuse competitive spirit in the students, to motivate them to become more active and dynamic, and to develop various types of skills in them, different academic and cultural activities and programs like seminars, extension lectures and competitions are organized by the Department. An Arabic wall magazine titled: سبحة الخواطر (Subhatul Khawatir) is issued by the students of the Department.
A rich collection of Arabic books in the well-furnished library of the campus fulfils all the resource-related requirements of the students and faculty members. The campus library has all major reference books on Arabic language and literature. Besides, it has a good number of dictionaries from Arabic to other languages and vice-versa. Total number of Arabic books in the library is around 1200 books. More Arabic books are expected to be added soon to the library.
