Implementing Uniform civil code a difficult task - Prof. Faizan Mustafa

Sughra Humayun Mirza Memorial Lecture held at MANUU

Hyderabad:

Implementing Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a difficult task in a country like India where every region has a different culture and tradition. UCC is been using as an election promise forgotten after the elections. These were the thoughts expressed today by Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University and former Vice Chancellor, Nalsar University of Law while delivering first Sughra Humayun Mirza memorial lecture “Indian Constitution, Gender Equality and Uniform Civil Code” at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU). Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, MANUU presided over and Prof. Fatima Ali Khan, former Head, Department of Geography & Director, Centre for Women Studies, Osmania University was the chief guest. Opposition to UCC on the basis of Freedom of religion will not sustain, instead right to culture under Article 29 is a better option, Prof. Faizan opined.

The Department of Women Education (DWE) in collaboration with Safdaria Girls High School, Hyderabad organised the memorial lecture.

Continuing his speech, Prof. Faizan Mustafa said that getting education was a difficult task for women in the past. Sughra Humayun Mirza, a noble lady and social reformer from Hyderabad not only had education but also encouraged other girls and women to be educated.

Prof. Ainul Hasan said it is extremely important for girls and women to be educated in this competitive era. Praising the steps taken by Sughra Humayun Mirza for the purpose of girls education he paid tribute to her services. MANUU is committed to the educational initiatives of girls and women, he added.

Earlier, Dr. Ameena Tahseen, Head, DWE & Program Coordinator delivered welcome address. Mr. Humayun Ali Mirza, Secretary, Safdaria Girls High School & Co-Coordinator proposed vote of thanks.

A documentary on the life of Sughra Humayun Mirza was also screened.
